What’s not to love about an Irish pub? Free-flowing music, beer and conversation serve up hours of entertainment.

These Pennsylvania homeowners were inspired to renovate a lower-level media room using their large collection of Irish walking sticks as a springboard for an Irish pub theme. But there’s much more fun on tap: There’s a full-fledged home theater, three other high-def TVs, a poker table, a billiards table and a well-stocked wine room.

The multifaceted lower level can accommodate plenty of patrons. “You can put five dozen people in that space and not seem crowded,” says Mark Glidden of electronics installer Stone-Glidden in Doylestown, Pa.  “You can go in the basement and probably not emerge from there for an entire winter.”

Stone-Glidden took on a space that he describes as your basic 1990s rec room with a behemoth rear-projection TV and lengthy windows that overwhelmed a barrier wall.

After inheriting the media system from previous homeowners and yearning for a large entertaining area, the owners decided it was time to update and began clipping pictures of media rooms from publications. Coincidentally, the owners attended a party in one of the homes whose media room the wife had saved and loved—and one that Stone-Glidden had outfitted.

For their dedicated theater, the original concept called for spotlighted shadowboxes on the walls to house the walking sticks. That idea didn’t stick, but the Irish pub feel carries on with the rounded doors, fluted columns, raised-panel wainscoting and generous use of oak throughout the basement. A Guinness sign doesn’t hurt, either.

The theater gives off a warm, amber hue to rival any fine ale, produced by 4-by-8-foot alcove Stone-Glidden created in the ceiling that’s lined with backlit mica.

“It’s probably more work than what we thought the client might want, but when we brought the idea to them they loved it,” says Glidden. “It really makes the room look taller and a little more grand than it actually is.” The performance is plenty grand as well, featuring a Sim2 projector partially tucked into the ceiling and a powerful 7.2-channel JBL Synthesis surround system.

The pool table, poker room and bar areas have their own flat-panel TVs, and iPods can be docked at the bar as one of the main music sources.

A Crestron control system ties together the room’s technologies, and Glidden simplified the buttons and settings as much as possible. We’ll drink to that.
