DPI impressed CEDIA attendees, including your’s truly, by showing bright and big pictures off DLP-projectors running LED lamps rather than traditional lamps. In the past, LED-based projectors were praised for their color fidelity, low noise, and long lamp life. Unfortunately they also haven’t been terribly bright. Now the company is offering two new models. The Titan LED and the M-Vision Cine 1080 LED. The Titan, a 3-chip, 3D DLP model produces 2,000 lumens of brightness. The color gamut produced by a 3-chip LED display is up to two times as broad as a single-chip DLP/LED projector. Because the DMDs are each dedicated to a primary color the TITAN 1080p LED simultaneously produces higher bit depth, color saturation and brightness than single-chip DLP/LED projectors. $79, 995.

The single-chip DLP New M-Vision LED 1000 produces 1,000 lumens. The RGB-based LED illumination system eliminates the need for a color wheel to produce primary colors. Instead, red, green and blue LEDs produce primary color illumination, rendering a color gamut and color saturation similar to that of a 3-chip DLP projector with no color wheel artifacts. $12,995.

While the light output seems less on paper than other projectors, Digital Projector says that due to the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect (H-K effect) LED projection systems are perceived by the viewer as being much brighter than their measured luminance specifications. Indeed both these projectors were easily able to light up the 160+ inch screen and looked fantastic at the company’s booth.
