Pick of the Week: HARRY POTTER

In light of Warner Bros’ recent announcement that they’ll be putting Harry, Ron, and Hermione on moratorium after the holidays, it would seem that now is the time to “Accio Blu-ray!” before they vanish from store shelves. We know that a more elaborate box set of all eight films IS coming and it will most certainly make its appearance around this time next year, but for many folks, Harry Potter: The Complete Collection Years 1-7 will be just what Madam Pomfrey ordered.

If, like many Potter fans, you’ve been buying these Blu-ray editions all along, the only one you’re missing is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. If that’s you, the wait is over. In a rare Friday release, the epic concluding chapter hits stores today along with the aforementioned box set . Not surprisingly, the film looks and sounds fantastic on Blu-ray - particularly the explosive assault on Hogwarts - and Warner has given us another superb “Maximum Movie Mode,” this time hosted by Neville Longbottom and others. One note for documentary and bonus lovers: there is an intriguing new Potter documentary entitled “When Harry Left Hogwarts” which ONLY appears on the Blu-ray edition. It will surely make it into next year’s ultimate, super duper box set, but those who can’t wait need only visit

Speaking as a father of two children who are currently immersed in the world of Harry Potter - we’re halfway through Book 6 right now - it is truly sad that this wondrous story has come to an end. Some of the films were better than others, but each of them brings something unique and compelling to the saga and Warner should be commended for the first rate job they’ve done with these Potter Blu-rays. Highly recommended.
