The most important technology changing TVs these days isn’t really anything inside the TV, and that’s the point. Cloud-based content and services have the potential to disrupt everything we currently take for granted with our content and TV providers. Already we’re starting to see cable operators struggling to keep subscribers from jumping ship in favor of streaming video. Disc-based movies are being replaced by video on demand or streaming, and even games depend on the cloud for at least part of their playable content. Eventually, with a combination of bigger bandwidth and improved compression and packing technologies, consumers, not studios or service providers, will be in charge of what comes into their TVs.
