One of the coolest things about DIY home audio is the ability to build your own amps, speakers and other devices. For those not happy with the sound of their DIY speaker crossovers and amplifier circuit boards, the California company Audience offers an array of aftermarket devices to further your DIY endeavors. Audience’s latest product is the Auricap High Resolution Capacitor and in my DIY application I used it to upgrade the sound of a Gibson Les Paul. With the help of Chris Maggio from Wakefield, Mass.-based Sarrin Music Studios, we placed a .015uf Auricap inline with my Les paul’s neck pickup controls and a .022uf capacitor inline with my bridge pickup’s tone and volume controls. The caps in my Les Paul provided smoother highs and a more detailed midrange response. To get an idea of the improvement; with the neck pickup engaged think of Eric Clapton’s “Woman” tone from the mid 1960s and you’ll get the idea. The Auricap XOs retail for less than $20 each and they provide a very cost effective sound upgrades for products ranging from speakers to guitars.
