Rock of Ages

It sounded like a good idea on paper: Bring the extremely popular musical to the big screen. It has contemporary music, it has Tom Cruise’s washboard abs, and it has a backup cast that includes Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin and Julianne Hough. So why exactly did this film flop so miserably? It could be the awful wigs or the fact that the movie was released the same week as Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted and Prometheus. You can decide.

Despite the fashion flashback, this release shouldn’t appear dated, thanks to a 2.35:1 aspect ratio and a matching DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. The 2-disc set includes extended and theatrical cuts of the movie, several featurettes about the ‘80s, a little about the Broadway production, and a Brett Michaels-hosted peek at bands from that era. The set also comes with a standard-def DVD and an UltraViolet Digital Copy.

Rating: PG-13
